Google My Business (now officially called Google Business Profile, but everyone still calls it GMB) is the single most important local SEO tool you have. It’s free. It’s powerful. And if you’re not using it, you’re basically telling potential customers, “Don’t find me.”

Here’s what a properly optimized Google Business Profile does for you:

Alright, let’s walk through the exact process. This works whether you’re setting up from scratch or claiming an existing listing someone else created.


STEP 1: GO TO GOOGLE BUSINESS PROFILE

Open your browser and head to: https://www.google.com/business/

Make sure you’re logged into the Google account you want to manage your business with. Pro tip: use a business email (like [email protected]) instead of a personal Gmail. This keeps things professional and makes it easier to transfer access later if needed.

Click “Manage now” to get started.


STEP 2: SEARCH FOR YOUR BUSINESS

Google will ask you to enter your business name. Type it in exactly as you want it to appear publicly.

  • If your business already exists — Google will show it in the search results. This might happen if a customer created a listing for you, or if Google auto-generated one based on public data. If you see your business, click on it and select “Claim this business.”
  • If your business doesn’t show up — Click “Add your business to Google” and you’ll start creating a fresh listing.

STEP 3: CHOOSE YOUR BUSINESS CATEGORY

Google will ask you to select a primary business category. This is crucial because it determines how you show up in search results.

STEP 5: ENTER YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION

Add your business phone number and website URL.

  • Use a phone number you actually answer. Missed calls = missed opportunities.
  • If you don’t have a website yet, skip it for now—but prioritize building one ASAP. Your Google Business Profile can act as a mini-website in the meantime.

STEP 6: VERIFY YOUR BUSINESS

Do NOT skip verification. Your profile won’t be fully active until you complete this step.


STEP 7: COMPLETE YOUR PROFILE (THIS IS WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS)

Once verified, it’s time to optimize. A half-filled profile gets ignored. A fully optimized profile dominates local search.
